Ron Johnson underestimated stepping into a ‘Jesuit High School Shirt ‘ retail model. He never had to manage product selection and purchasing before. An Apple Store is a tiny footprint, service intensive place to sell Apple’s own products, which is a high-end luxury item with cult-like devotion. Fanboys waited outside an Apple store for the opportunity to blow $800 on an iPhone 1…nobody is going to do that at JCP. It simply doesn’t have the buzz-worthy merchandise to pull off that kind of devoted consumer.
